Africa Fund

The Pebble Hill Church Africa Fund has been established to sponsor members of a Herero family living in the post-apartheid southern African country of Namibia and assist them in their struggle to rise from poverty to self sustainability.  We sponsor three small children to insure that they complete their education, are fed, clothed and sheltered.  We also sponsor 4 young adults in their efforts to obtain employment and self-sustenance through job training, and access to information. We are an example of what we call The Handshake Project, a commitment to building peace and stability through palpable interpersonal friendship with individuals and families in the Third World, fighting poverty in their daily lives.

In Namibia, nearly half of the population struggles to survive on less than U.S. $2 per day, even though it has one of the most developed infrastructures of African nations.  By enhancing the opportunity of one family group to become fuller participants in their nation’s modernizing economy, we create an example for how small spiritual organizations can assist families, and ultimately entire countries and continents.

Our mission is to help this family help themselves.  We are committed to assistance with developing goals and plans that can have lasting impact.  We believe in the power of loving communication and sharing of ideas and aspirations.  We commit to sharing our material resources, our knowledge, and our opportunities and access to information so that this family may share in our good fortune.

Through the expanding contacts with schools, libraries, and community services we develop through our interpersonal involvement with a single family, we intend to grow our efforts and sponsor other individuals and organizations in Namibia, and other sub-saharan African countries. We actively network to engage and support parallel efforts.

We act as a conduit for information in the powerful and growing world effort to know Africa, in both its beauty and cultural richness, and its current crisis.  The Africa Fund exemplifies the Pebble Hill community’s effective participation in the world movement to end extreme poverty, hunger, and preventable disease, and foster fuller peaceful participation for all citizens of the world.
